MICHAEL CHARRON
CONCEPTUAL REALIST

The Realist

I am a realist working in the honored tradition of "plein air", which simply means that I work outdoors, on an easel, from direct observation. I am interested in painting Colorado's designated Wilderness areas which requires my art equipment, camping equipment and provisions be packed in by my four llamas. My work offers the landscape painting collector views rarely scene and most likely never painted. During these pack trips I make dozens of alla prima vignettes along with ink/pencil drawings that feature notations of colorways, value systems and events. In addition to the handmade references I take photographs to employ, during the winter months, when I create larger studio paintings.

24 x 48" "Sunrise on the Sawtooth" oil on stretched canvas. Studio version based on an 8 x 16" alla prima plein air oil painting developed during the "Pictorial Essays from Wilderness Journeys 2009" Syndication.

The Conceptualist

I believe that art of enduring value must reflect the culture from which it comes. The culture that I explore is one that suggests that there is a worldwide spiritual awakening currently underway. Although it is frequently referred to as "New Age" consciousness, its foundation is in ancient wisdom, an empowering wisdom being revisited by contemporary quantum metaphysicians. Specifically, my traditionally approached landscape paintings are imbued with drawings and existential musings, cursively written underneath what eventually becomes the finished painting. My paintings, or “Sensory Communions” are vehicles for my participation into the cultural value of enlightenment. To better understand the cultural connection with art and the reflection therein, consider that my musings are cursively written. Cursive writing is no longer taught in school, cursive writing is destined as an antediluvian discipline and will be a specific cultural marker for our times.

Below is a painting titled "Divine Glow". The piece is an oil on canvas measuring 32 x 40" and was based on an 8 x 10" alla prima plein air piece done on 2011. The conceptual aspects of the painting includes the "communion" as well as the "artist's statement" about "Divine Glow" which was featured in the June 2012 issue of Southwest Art

“Divine Glow”, like all of my paintings, allows me to participate in existential contemplation. I actually refer to my paintings, and my painting process, as a “Sensory Communion”, a visual prayer. The paintings are literally infused with undetectable writings.

The idea that the blue-gray mountain supports the yellow foreground is a metaphor for back of everything is the all, the divine nature. However, there are unconventional potentialities. Could the yellow aspen foreground be supporting the blue gray background? Did I explore divinity in the process of painting “Divine Glow” or did divinity explore me? Is the manifested painting of any real significance? Or is it the investigation, through the process of painting it that is crucial?
